by Patterson, Grenny, Maxfield, McMillan and Switzler
Review by John Golden

INFLUENCER is one of the most powerful books I have ever read. It relates to all aspects of life including time management and is unlimited in its capacity to impact your life whether you are a CEO, midlevel manager, parent or coaching a group of 8 year old soccer players. I have used and benefited from the power of influence throughout my career and urge you to learn how to skillfully apply this powerful tool.

Most people feel disempowered, believing they are unable to change the current state of things. If you struggle with poor time management habits, applying the principles presented in this book may just be the key that unlocks the door of time for you. Not only will you learn how to incent yourself to become a better manager of your time, you will learn how to deflect or redirect some of the overwhelming directives coming your way today.

Great Time Management learned you can become a skilled INFLUENCER. Two foundational principles create the ability to influence change.

People will attempt to change their behavior if both of the following are true:

  • They believe the value they receive is worth the effort required to make the change.
  • They are convinced they are able to do what is required.

Whether you are attempting to take control of your time management process or influence the outcome of a world changing improvement, you must read this book and learn the basic concepts taught.

  • Find Vital Behaviors – A few critical behaviors can drive a lot of change. Learn the difference between behaviors and outcomes.
  • Change the Way You Change Minds – When it is impossible to create an actual experience, it’s best to create a vicarious experience. Most of the time a well told story accomplishes the intent.
  • Make Change Inevitable – Master the six sources of influence: Personal Motivation; Personal Ability; Social Motivation; Social Ability; Structural Motivation; Structural Ability.
  • Make the Undesirable Desirable – The biggest motivators of excellence are intrinsic. People have a power desire to do what’s right, to accomplish something and to be proud.
  • Surpass Your Limits – Demand higher achievement levels by studying, applying and practicing vital behaviors.
  • Harness Peer Pressure – Learn to use the “power of one” principle to exert greater influence. The desire to be accepted, respected and connected are the things that really pull at human heart strings. Learn how to co-opt this awesome power and you can change just about anything.
  • Find Strength in Numbers – Powerful influence strategies offer the social capital required to help make change inevitable.
  • Design Rewards and Demand Accountability – Carefully choose extrinsic rewards. Less is often more. Do your best to immediately link rewards to behavioral change.
  • Change the Environment – It is much easier to change things rather than people. Consider changing the environment as the first line of influence.

Apply these principles of INFLUENCE and master time management.
