As most of you know, positive reinforcement tends to increase the likelihood of the reoccurrence of desired behavioral change. It’s the old carrot and stick philosophy. We have experienced faster behavioral change using positive reinforcement along the way and highly recommend its use.

The time management techniques Reward celebration may be as small or large as you desire and can occur as frequently as you want. Use the following recommendations whenever developing a personal reward system:

  1. The reward or celebration should be something personally desirable.
It may seem inconsequential to others but to you it should be very satisfying. It doesn’t have to cost anything either. Ex. Close your eyes and relax for a few minutes; exercise; meditate;  go to lunch with friends; etc.

  2. In the beginning of the process determine what milestones you want to celebrate.
This will give you something to look forward to and should be an incentive to move forward as quickly as possible. You may celebrate several times per day if that works for you or your celebrations may be spread over several days or weeks. Use an incentive system that works for you.

  3. At some point involve others in your celebration.
    This does two things.

    1. It publicizes your accomplishments. Thus, helping others become more aware of your efforts and create a higher level of appreciation for you.
    2. It also creates a higher level of accountability for your own efforts. If others know you are attempting to learn something new you feel more compelled to get it done.
    3. It gives you a way to thank others who have helped you along the way.

Bottom line, whenever we accomplish something satisfying usually we want to pat ourselves on the back for a job well done. Go ahead you deserve it.
